In the 3D printer group, my group had to make there own project which we picked one of these which was a phone holder, or ear bud holder, or a coin holder. I picked the earbud holder and and created it. What a 3D printer does is it makes things out of plastic or other materials, we use plastic and then it melts it to be become flexible to move and stick to other plastic material. When it starts to make the product it starts out with a base and works it self up until it finishes. When you create things in a 3D printer, you have to make sure there is no standing parts that are floating, say you made a item with legs and a flat base, you would want to flip the item on makerbot (a site that you use to transfer the item to the 3D printer standards ) so that the legs stand up towards the ceiling and the flat base facing towards the ground. Other times you will have to use pegs or a holder to hold things up that will still be floating even if you flip the item every way.
Here is my sketch to my earphone holder. It will be 2.5 x 2 in and hold two earbud cords. So how to make this is to get on to inventor and then hit start 2D sketch. Once you have done that then click the line tool and create this. After go back and click on the dimension tool and dimension it to this size. Then click on the 3D tab and go to extrude, extrude then click the material and it will be half of an inch up. Once you get this done then click on the fillet tool and click on the inside that is .5 back and make it .25, do this to all of them.
Once you are done then take a flash drive and go to makerbot. Click on print and the earbud holder will come up and the make it to 1000% which will make it to the correct size, save it and the go down to the 3D printer to print.
Here is the finished earbud holder and my one pair of earbuds on there. It is comfortable and it will feel like a phone or wallet is in you pocket.
What I learned:
I learned that the 3D printer can fillet things which curve in. I also learned that my first idea would have failed and this was much better and a better idea. It feels like a phone or wallet is in your pants pocket which is normal. This took 1 and 7 minutes to create and it was really long and slow. The 3D printer takes a lot of time and care to keep these up and running. Lots of people like them and use them so it was hard to do it the day I wanted to print.
